For anyone connected with Wisconsin Dells and its "water business"

You've no doubt heard: Lake Delton has been drained

Credit the recent and unprecedented heavy rains of the weekend for causing the outright collapse of Lake Delton this morning (Monday, 9 June) and its draining into the Wisconsin River by way of a freshet across saturated lowlands, in turn closing a part of County Road A.

The Dell Creek Dam, which created Lake Delton in 1927, is still holding; however, the next big problem is what might happen if the Mirror Lake Dam downstream fails, in turn draining Mirror Lake and sending its waters into Lake Delton's remains. (Wisconsin DNR crews are monitoring the situation, where its waters are overrunning the top.)

As a consequence of the Lake Delton collapse, the Lower Dells Boat Tours, the Original Wisconsin Ducks, the Dells Army Ducks and the Tommy Bartlett Show are closed until further notice.

County A in the vicinity of the Dell Creek bridge is closed due to the washout, and will likely remain so for the forseeable future.

All other attractions (the waterparks included) remain open.

In fact, the Visitor and Convention Bureau has been receiving plenty of phone and online enquiries about the area since the news of Lake Delton's demise broke this afterlunch.

Those wishing to help with relief efforts may want to donate to the American Red Cross or The Salvation Army, and preferably with a cash donation rather than "in-kind" such of, say, used clothes or canned foods; the latter only takes up warehouse space, and both charities would rather prefer to purchase relief supplies (including cleaning and disinfection aids, hot meals, clothes and emergency housing) rather than accept donations of castoffs. Beware of suspicious-sounding appeals as are spontaneously generated in the wake of disasters such as this.

SUPPLEMENTAL: In case anybody gets any ideas about how Lake Delton may be saved thanks to the freshet as opened up, one likely possibility could be constructing a new dam across the newly-opened gap--perhaps with a navigation lock as would allow excursion and pleasure craft to enter Lake Delton from the Wisconsin River.

And something as originally proposed for the Dell Creek Dam which created Lake Delton, but was thwarted by the Great Depression: A hydroelectric power station as could generate "green" energy which could be put onto the Midwestern grid.

This in addition to a new span for County Road A.
