Your Vacation Station: No doubt fun while it lasted

For the first time since 2003, visitor information will NOT be available over the airwaves in and around Wisconsin Dells--the AM such, in particular.

WDLS-AM (900 kHz/333 metres) gave up on its "Your Vacation Station" idea, from studios in downtown Wisconsin Dells, @ the end of last season, switching to a satellite-delivered country/western programme, after four seasons of trying to mix visitor information (in some cases, supplied by actual visitors invited to the studios on Broadway) and a mix of musical selections across a broad range of genres (known in the industry as "middle of the road," or "MOR" for short)--not just in the Waterpark Capital, but also by streaming audio across the Information Stuporbahn, which Your Correspondent was fond of listening to when he had opportunity to go on the computers @ Winona State University, which until last fall was where he was able to afford Internet access.

But while WDLS was Your Vacation Station, it was a rather interesting station to listen to.

Enough so as to where yours truly would imagine many of the same jingles which the legendary Radio Luxembourg used on its English-language service to Great Britain @ 208 metres/1440 kHz in the 1980's (which you can listen to on this fan site in the apropos section) being, in effect, recycled for use on the Mighty Mighty 'DLS (never mind where its daytime power was limited to 1 kw and nighttime such to only 250 watts) to make the station breaks more interesting and @ once befitting of the Waterpark Capital of the World.

Not to mention the occasional resort to "Engrish" for slogans such as "Creating a healing time and space beyond reality for you" and "The perfect style with a great taste to join you in your dream-enriched world," followed by a hearty-sounding "W-D-L-S!!"

And oh yes: I also contributed a few worthwhile programme ideas which never quite made it to air, one of which would have involved listener e-mails to the online feed asking questions about the Dells region being answered on air ... and some in the vein of the gone-but-not-forgotten Monitor on NBC Radio (1955-1975), with remotes from some of the "in" places around Wisconsin Dells, visitor information and tips, tourist interviews and online listener shoutouts.

One of which could have aired from some breakfast place or two weekend mornings, with tourist interviews in the mix.

Another being an evening show as could be considered "broad spectrum," with remotes from along Broadway or other worthwhile shoobie hangouts.

Goodbye, Your Vacation Station. It was fun while it lasted.

(But then again, who's to imagine the likelihood of such a concept appearing in online radio?)
